Dr Jennifer Chen is a clinical optometrist and director of Retina Services at City Eye Centre, Brisbane. Dr Chen graduated with First Class Honours from QUT. She received a University Medal for her exceptional academic achievements and clinical excellence.

Dr Chen’s research background

Ranked among Australia’s top ten doctoral candidates, Dr Jennifer Chen pursued further training after graduating. She completed a Doctor of Philosophy and later undertook a Post-Doctoral Fellowship. Her field of research spans several areas. These include studies on myopia development and myopia control, electrophysiology of retinal processing pathways and diagnostic ophthalmic imaging in retinal diseases.

With 25 years of experience in clinical practice, Dr Chen is therapeutically endorsed and has a keen interest in macular and retinal diseases. For over a decade, Dr Chen served as a Governor-appointed assessor on the Professional Conduct Review Panel at Queensland Health.

Dr Chen’s clinical interest

In addition to her extensive experience in clinical practice, Dr Chen has a strong interest in clinical research and contributes to the scientific literature. She has authored scientific papers in both optometry and ophthalmology journals. She has also co-authored a book chapter on Macular Surgery: Current Practice and Trends. Furthermore, she has worked collaboratively with research teams on multi-centre clinical trials for new treatments of eye diseases.

Dr Chen has been a prominent advocate for the significant clinical benefits of optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging in patient care, since its commercial availability in the early 2000s. Her current focus lies in the advancement and application of wide-field, high-definition OCT angiography (OCTA). She also works on the application of imaging modalities to retinal diseases. This strong interest in the implementation of ophthalmic imaging will take greater focus in the ground-breaking field of dry macular degeneration treatment.

Dr Chen is known for her thorough, compassionate approach. She strongly believes in the value of patient management through advanced diagnostic imaging technology. This improves patient education and enhances eye care delivery, ensuring optimal treatment outcomes.
