Your Operation

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU REQUIRE AN EYE OPERATION?

If you require an eye operation, we will arrange your surgery booking with the selected hospital, provide you with estimated costs and any out-of-pocket expenses, and all the necessary information and forms relating to your procedure.

If you have private health insurance, we recommend that you check with the health fund regarding the level of your cover and the health fund rebate payable to you for the procedure. If you do not have private health insurance or hospital cover, our admin staff will liase with the hospital to provide you with a quote.

Pre-admission

The hospital at which you are having the operation will contact you regarding admission forms and pre-operative instructions. They will also advise on fasting and admission time prior to the surgery. Fasting time is usually 6 hours for food and 2 hours for clear fluids and water prior to your admission time. It is important that you have an accompanying person with you on the day of your surgery or your surgery may be cancelled by the hospital.

The Anaesthetist will contact you regarding all anaesthetic information and provide their quote directly.

If you are on any blood-thinning agents such as Aspirin, Warfarin, Plavix, Xarelto, Eliquis, Pradaxa, or fish oil, it is important that you advise us so our doctors can provide you with appropriate pre-operative instructions on whether to cease these medications prior to your surgery.

If you are a diabetic, it is important to advise of your medications, particularly if you are on insulin, SGLT2 inhibitors such as Janumet or GLP-1 inhibitors such as Ozempic. Please also notify us if you are on any drugs which are used for prostate conditions such as Duodart and Tamsulosin as these may affect your pupil dilation.

What happens after surgery?

You will be provided with post-operative care instructions by the discharge nurse at the hospital. If you have had your procedure at the day surgery, an appointment will be made for you to see Dr Lee at City Eye Centre for a post-operative check early the next day.

If you are an overnight stay patient at St Andrew’s Hospital, Dr Lee will see you the following morning at the hospital and you will be discharged after your post-operative check. We will continue to monitor you during your recovery period and further post-operative appointments will be made for you, usually at 1-2 weeks and 3-4 weeks after surgery.
